Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious offense that can lead to serious consequences. 

  • With a concentration of 0.5–1.2‰ alcohol – BGN 500 + revocation of license for 6 months;
  • Over 1.2‰ – BGN 1,000–2,000 + license suspension for 1–2 years;
  • Above 1.2 per mille or rejection of verification –a fine of BGN 2000-3000, confiscation of control points and temporary revocation of the driver's license, plus an administrative measure to impound the vehicle, criminal prosecution is also possible;
  • Repeated violation – BGN 3,000–5,000 + imprisonment for 3 years.

Using a mobile phone without a hands-free device while driving is dangerous and leads to a fine of BGN 50 and 6 points.In case of repetition - BGN 100. Writing messages or surfing the Internet ends with a fine of BGN 50 to BGN 200. 

Failure to comply with road markings or signaling

Failure to comply with road markings or signaling, including passing a red traffic light, results in a fine of BGN 100 to BGN 300 and the confiscation of up to 4 checkpoints.The financial penalty for taking the right of way at an intersection or a pedestrian path is in the amount of 20 to 150 BGN. For overtaking in a prohibited place, the penalty is 300 BGN + license suspension for 3 months.

Failure to use a seat belt is a common violation, which is punishable by a fine of BGN 50, as well as for each passenger not wearing a seat belt and confiscation of checkpoints.

Improper parking

Improper parking is a common violation that can cause inconvenience to other road users.Fines for improper parking vary depending on the location and severity of the violation.Parking in places designated for the disabled is punished most severely - up to BGN 200. Parking at public transport stops or in places that pose a traffic hazard leads to fines ranging from BGN 20 to BGN 150. For more serious violations, such as blocking a sidewalk or footpath, the amount is from BGN 50 to BGN 300 and forced repatriation is possible.

Driving without insurance „Civil Liability#8220;

Driving without a valid licenseinsurance„Civil Liability“is a serious violation, which, in addition to a fine of BGN 250 for the first violation and BGN 1,000 for a second violation, also leads to a possible temporary suspension of the vehicle.
